The 12 October Puente in Madrid: How to Plan the Long Weekend

Spain’s national day, the Fiesta Nacional, falls on Monday 12 October 2026. Because it lands on a Monday, it creates a three-day weekend, what Spaniards call a puente. It is one of the busiest travel weekends of the Spanish autumn, and Madrid is where the main events happen. Here is how to plan it.

What actually happens on 12 October

The centrepiece is a military parade through the middle of Madrid, attended by the King and Queen. It runs along the Paseo del Prado axis and finishes near Plaza de Colón, and it includes a parachutist descending with a giant Spanish flag and a flypast by the air force. It usually starts late morning and draws a very large crowd.

Exact timings and the final route are published by the city closer to the date. The official listing is on esMadrid, and it is worth checking, because road closures around the Prado and Cibeles are extensive on the morning of the parade.

Two practical warnings

First, it is a national public holiday. Opening hours change, some businesses close, and the ones that stay open get busy. Check anything you are relying on rather than assuming a normal Monday.

Second, if you want to watch the parade, arrive early and expect to stand. If you would rather avoid it entirely, stay west of Gran Vía for the morning and the city feels almost normal.

A three-day plan that works

Saturday. Do the heavy sightseeing while the city is at full strength. The three big museums sit within a few minutes’ walk of each other on the Paseo del Prado. In the evening, head to Malasaña or La Latina for dinner and bars.

Sunday. Slower. El Rastro market in the morning, a long lunch, then a walk in the Retiro. October evenings are cool enough that a rooftop terrace still works but you will want a jacket.

Monday. Parade in the morning if you want it, then a relaxed afternoon before travelling home. Book any restaurant in advance, because holiday lunch is a serious business here.

What else is on in Madrid that month

October is one of the strongest months in the Madrid calendar. Suma Flamenca, the region’s flamenco festival, runs from mid-October across Teatros del Canal and other stages, so it overlaps with the puente weekend.

And if you have any flexibility on dates, look at the start of the month instead. The Madrid Comedy Festival runs 1–4 October 2026, with stand-up, improv, storytelling and roast in English, Spanish, French, Hindi, Italian and more. That weekend also has two arena concerts in the city, which we cover in our guide to the first weekend of October. Shifting your trip forward by a week gets you considerably more to do.

Getting around and what to bring

The Metro is the easiest way to move on a holiday weekend, and it runs a full service. Check timetables on Metro de Madrid, and see our transport guide for which ticket to buy. For clothing, mid-October days are mild and the evenings are properly cool, so bring a layer. Our October packing guide has the detail.

Frequently asked questions
